Yep, it was my birthday

Just a moment to thank everyone for the kind birthday wishes you sent yesterday. Friends and family, thanks for remembering. To those of you who stopped by Facebook to wish me a happy birthday because you read my work, I appreciate the birthday sentiments, too, because they remind me that my work reaches people beyond just the headlines scrawling through the feed.
I had a nice, if quiet, birthday yesterday. A birthday apple pie (America!) from Sally’s Sweet Shoppe. Birthday wishes from the family. Shoveling snow with my daughter. Scraping out my car without a snow scraper with my son. Hunting for dinner after the planned takeout restaurant closed while I was scraping out my car. Ordering Chinese take-out, and then buying a snow scraper with my son while waiting for our food. Laughing with my son as we both remembered something Jeremy Clarkson said about a monkey. Listening to my wife and daughter describe the two-hour marathon concert I was mercifully spared. (No, I have no desire to listen to a children’s choir sing We Are the World.) Finally, some quiet time after everyone went to bed, watching a comedian explain why he won’t go back to Starbucks (it had nothing to do with red cups).

As I write this on Sunday morning, the house is quiet. I had some leftover Chinese food and some apple pie (America!) for breakfast. The coffee is warm and good. I’m listening to a Ricochet podcast while doing research for a possible magazine article. Later the kids and I will visit friends who live along the Christmas Parade route downtown.

Life is not bad. The roof is sound and so is the family underneath it. That’s enough of a birthday present for me. Thank you so much for your well-wishes on my birthday. May all of your birthdays be shared with loved ones, and thank you for continuing to read my columns. And follow my writer’s page on Facebook to get the latest published articles.
