Unfortunately, I’ve had to turn on the “moderation” feature for the comments, at least for a while. Comments will have to be read and approved by me before they can appear on the site. I didn’t want to do it, but I’m forced to do it. There have been a couple of incidents. Someone pretended to be Keith Schmitz from the blog, folkbum. Another person (anonymous, of course) has decided to use the comments on my blog to attack my family. There have been other comments as well that have had to be pulled down because of content that could be libelous.
It’s a shame because I like comments, even those I disagree with. I learn from the comments and the commenters here are generally better behaved better than elsewhere. I’m glad this is not the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel where the comments are more like graffiti than actual coherent thoughts. I try to hold myself to a decent standard (I don’t always succeed) and I think it pays off in the discussions here. I’ve never felt embarrassed to ask public officials to respond in the comments because I think they will be respectfully treated.
For the near future comments are just going to have to be slower while people wait for me to read them. Making matters worse, I’m not planning on being online very much the next couple of days, so I’m not going to be reading comments as fast as they get posted. Unfortunately, that’s just one more reason for me to hold comments until I can read them.
