Julie Lassa is full of PolitiCrap
Christian Schneider of the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute is the latest to call PolitiCrap on a politician’s claims, this time State Senator Julie Lassa.
In the Sean Duffy versus Julie Lassa congressional race, the NRCC has begun running an ad that says “Lassa talks a balanced budget, but left us with a deficit.” The ad, of course, is referring to the $2.7 billion budget the State of Wisconsin currently faces. Lassa has issued a press release rebutting the ad – and in it, uses a study issued by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute (WPRI) to absolve herself of any responsibility for the deficit. The report, written by former Wisconsin Revenue Secretary Richard Chandler, says:
“The severe recession that started in 2008 hit state budgets hard, in Wisconsin and across the nation… The impact of the recession will be felt over at least a five-year period, from mid-2008 through mid-2013, not just for one or two years.”
Lassa thinks that merely pointing out the fact the U.S. was in a recession is enough to wash her hands of the state deficit. But, in fact, the rest of the report shows specifically how actions by the Legislature contributed to future deficits; most notably, the use of one-time federal “stimulus” funds that won’t be available in the next budget.
Lassa voted for the most recent budget which left the state with a $2.7 billion deficit, and voted for the previous budget which left the state with a $1.6 billion deficit before the recession even occurred.
