More on the McLobster

3

Bad news for McDonalds.  Subway now has more locations worldwide than McDonalds. (thks: Owen)

The sandwich chain surpassed the world’s largest hamburger chain in terms of number of stores in the U.S. in 2002 and now it has taken the global lead.

Subway had 33,749 restaurants worldwide at the end of last year, according to the company. McDonald’s Corp. had 32,737, according a regulatory filing.

McDonald’s, however, remains the revenue champion. The company reported $24 billion in revenue for its last fiscal year. Subway generated roughly $15.2 billion, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Perhaps if McDonalds would consider selling the McLobster nationally, the buying public would demand more McDonalds.  On the flip side, maybe Subway should offer a lobster salad sandwich.

Steve Prestegard of Marketplace Magazine emailed to tell me that the McLobster sandwich sold for $6.00 in Maine.  That’s not that outrageous.

On the other hand, if I’m in Maine I’m not sure I am going to buy lobster at McDonalds.  It’s like eating a McBrat in Wisconsin.  But I would be tempted to try a McLobster if they sold it here.
