No asterisk on the president’s promise

In the Obama Administration’s attempt to alter history by adding qualifiers to President Barack Obama’s promise (helped by the New York Times), somebody forgot to scrub the White House website. (Great catch by Dave Weigel.)

Phil Kerpen found this very specific promise made by Obama right before the Obamacare exchanges launched and crashed:

And so today, I want to speak plainly, clearly, honestly, about what it means for you and for the people you care about.

Now, let’s start with the fact that even before the Affordable Care Act fully takes effect, about 85 percent of Americans already have health insurance -– either through their job, or through Medicare, or through the individual market. So if you’re one of these folks, it’s reasonable that you might worry whether health care reform is going to create changes that are a problem for you — especially when you’re bombarded with all sorts of fear-mongering.

So the first thing you need to know is this: If you already have health care, you don’t have to do anything.

Oh, but that’s not what he really meant, right?

Oceania was at war with Eastasia: Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia. A large part of the political literature of five years was now completely obsolete. Reports and records of all kinds, newspapers, books, pamphlets, films, sound-tracks, photographs–all had to be rectified at lightning speed. Although no directive was ever issued, it was known thatthe chiefs of the Department intended that within one week no reference to the war with Eurasia, or the alliance with Eastasia, should remain in existence anywhere.
