Poker party fundraiser for Joy and Zoey on Saturday
Joy Callahan’s type 1 diabetes is so severe she cannot live independently without a Diabetic Alert Service Dog. Zoey is being trained to assist Joy with her blood sugar management and to retrieve medication when necessary. Unfortunately a service dog is very expensive.
We are asking for your help in raising money to cover the expense for Zoey, a diabetic alert service dog that can scent out blood sugar lows and highs 20-30 minutes before a diabetic body might be able to feel it.
A wonderful solution has come into focus – Warren Retrievers. This company was started by a diabetic that provides dogs to diabetics that can warn them when their blood sugars are changing up to 30 minutes before there is a problem. These dogs are highly trained to assist someone based on very specific needs. For instance, if Joy is unresponsive to the dog, the dog is trained to pad a device that calls 911. The dog can retrieve sugar for low blood sugars when needed. This program is a chance for Joy to have a longer and more secure, independent life, and will allow her some peace of mind that when she goes to sleep she will wake up in the morning.
This program asks us to contribute $25000 over the next 2 1/2 years to provide this dog not only to her, but to other adults and kids that also need this type of help. Please help in the life of Joy and raising money for other diabetics in need.
There is a fundraiser at Big Dog Sports Grill (appropriately enough) in Milwaukee, 9427 W Greenfield Ave, from noon to 5:00 PM. There is a poker tournament with a suggested buy-in of $40, with $25 re-buys for the first two hours, and $20 add-ons for the first two hours. The poker tournament will go until there is a winner.
In addition to the poker tournament, there will be a silent auction and raffle prizes (drawing at 4:00 PM). Have a fun time and help raise money for a great cause.
If you’re unable to attend, Qdoba in Wauwatosa at 12345 W. Capitol Drive is donating the proceeds from entrees purchased between 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM on June 18th. Say that you want the donation to go to Zoey for Joy.
If you can’t make it to either event, you can donate through the website. The donation is tax deductible.
