The parade of widows and orphans in front of the Milwaukee County Board
I skipped Monday night’s Milwaukee County Board public hearing on the budget but my sources tell me I missed some classic moments.
For example, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, instead of being bumped to the head of the line as public officials often are at these things, was made to wait at least 20 minutes to speak even though he was the only public official there and board members knew he had to leave for another appointment. (Barrett was there to try to salvage the 911 calling part of the police deal with Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele.)
County Board Chairman Marina Dimitrijevic was visibly irritated when Rob Henken from the policy forum said, “I’m sure you all had a chance to read our analysis of the county executive’s budget in which we commend him for what he’s done to address the structural deficit and the debt without cutting services.” He then questioned some of the changes made by the budget committee.
The unions were there for a mutual love fest, of course. After all, they run the board now, right?
