The wrong Thompson

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting Ed Thompson, the brother of former Governor Tommy Thompson, is running for state senator as a Republican.

Senate Republican Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) told reporters Monday that Thompson will announce later this week he is running against Sen. Katheleen Vinehout (D-Alma).

Thompson is best known as the Libertarian candidate for governor who received eleven percent of the vote in 2002.  Thompson is also supportive of the “Truther” movement, the belief that the 9-11 attacks were the result of conspiracy by the US government, as I reported here and here.  The interview in which Thompson supported the conspiracy theories is still available online.  The interview was conducted by fellow conspiracy theorist and one-time Libertarian candidate for congress Kevin Barrett

I know Republicans are nostalgic for the Tommy Thompson days.  I know they would love to have anyone named Thompson running for any office.  But this is the Thompson who is supportive of 9-11 conspiracy theories, not the guy who pushed welfare reform and school choice.

What the hell is Fitzgerald thinking?  Fitzgerald needs to withdraw his support of Thompson’s candidacy – now.
