They won’t have Newt Gingrich to kick around anymore

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich will not run for President.

“Newt is not running,” spokesman Rick Tyler said. “It is legally impermissible for him to continue on as chairman of American Solutions (for Winning the Future) and to explore a campaign for president.”

Gingrich decided “to continue on raising the challenges America faces and finding solutions to those challenges” as the group’s chairman, Tyler said, “rather than pursuing the presidency.”

Gingrich’s decision is a welcome one. He can best serve his party by campaigning for ideas and candidates. But to have a candidate with such a flawed personal life and a professional history of failure as Speaker, including an ethics fine, the party would be setting itself up for disaster in ’08.

That’s if Gingrich could have made it through the primaries, where he would have further divided conservative opposition to Giuliani. Whatever time for a Gingrich candidacy may have passed or maybe never was. There’s a different calling for Gingrich.
