Which way will the environmentalist blow on Waukesha’s water issue?

Over at the MacIver Institute, another look at the city of Waukesha’s quest for an alternative water supply. The city recently annexed property purchased with the intent of digging more shallow wells if the application for a diversion of Lake Michigan water under the Great Lakes Compact is not approved. That giant sucking sound you hear is the city sticking straws into the shallow aquifer that also feeds nearby streams and the Vernon Marsh. So why are environmental groups like the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation opposed to the more ecological diversion from Lake Michigan, especially when they cited the diversion as a reason for passing the Compact?

Will environmentalists support the science of the diversion or will they allow their prejudices against Waukesha to rule, even if it means more harm to the environment?
