The BBC reports singer George Michael has passed away. He was 53. As one half of the pop duo Wham! and later as a pop artist, Michael’s music typified what many remember about music from the 1980s. Nostalgia for the Wham! sound even inspired a movie, Music and Lyrics.
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go may have been one of the silliest pop songs ever written. But the songs Freedom! 90 and Faith were brilliant, and Careless Whisper proved that the British import synth pop of the 1980s aimed at teenagers didn’t have to be vapid and insipid.
A personal favorite around the Wigderson Library & Pub is Everything She Wants, a song about a man driven to the edge by the material demands of his shrew wife:
Some people work for a living,
Some people work for fun,
Girl, I just work for you.
They told me marriage was a give and take,
Well, show me you can take you’ve got some giving to do.
And now you tell me that you’re having my baby,
I’ll tell you that I’m happy if you want me to
One step further and my back will break,
If my best isn’t good enough
Than how can it be good enough for two?
I can’t work any harder than I do
Yes, he was glamorous, good looking and talented, all of the things that made him a pop idol. Michael was also clearly troubled and struggling with addiction problems. As loud as his life was lived, we are told his death from heart failure happened quietly at his home. Part of our youth passed with him. May Michael rest in peace.
