Don’t confuse us with the “facts”

James Taranto’s Best of the Web Today just takes the whole idea of “fact checking” and beats it to a pulp:

Trunks on Fire
The awful “fact check” fad has come not only to the presidential debate stage but also to women’s magazines. Check out this “check” from a Real Simple article titled “4 Swimsuit Myths”:

Myth: Wear black to look slimmer.
Fact: Navy, plum, brown, and dark green do the trick, too. Vertical and diagonal stripes and tiny prints can also make the body look leaner.

For the sake of argument, let’s stipulate that navy, plum, brown, dark green, vertical stripes, diagonal stripes and tiny prints can “do the trick, too.” The word “too” gives away the game here: Real Simple admits that black does make you look slimmer–that the “myth” it purports to be debunking is true. Someone must be hoping to go to work for the Associated Press.
