Rush football madness
There’s not a whole lot to add to what Kevin Binversie and Sean Hackbarth wrote about the left’s campaign to stop Rush Limbaugh from becoming part owner of the St Louis Rams. Limbaugh had to know his bid would be controversial, especially after his stint with ESPN. It was almost as if he never really wanted to be an owner but just wanted the controversy.
Becoming an owner in the NFL was never easy. The AFL was founded by prospective owners that couldn’t get in. The first Dallas Cowboys owner, Clint Murchison, had to buy the rights to the Washington Redskins fight song to force that owner to allow Murchison to buy the franchise.
The left will never allow Limbaugh to find legitimacy, the popular culture doesn’t support him, and the NFL shuns controversy. Effectively, Limbaugh has been blacklisted as effectively as anyone in Hollywood under HUAC and McCarthyism.
Should there be some sort of conservative backlash against the NFL? There should be, probably, but there won’t be. The NFL will chug along just fine until the owners find some other way to wreck the sport.
As for me, I’ll still watch. But it’s been less so over the years. The older I get, the less interest I have in professional sports. The commercials are inappropriate for families. The players’ behaviors have reached new lows. The distance between the teams and the fans has never been greater, even if the games are now shown in Hi Def.
Now the NFL is telling another segment of their fan base that they’re really not interested in keeping us around. They would prefer Keith Olbermann to Rush Limbaugh.
I don’t think a successful boycott is likely, but someday the NFL may wonder when it started to lose a significant portion of its fan base. It will have begun when fathers stop looking forward to sitting with their sons on Sundays after church and watching their favorite teams together. It will be when we find that we just have better things to do with our time.

What a bunch of hooey, James.
That whole pesky HUAC thing was a travesty because it was committed by our government. This is a bunch of rich white guys who don’t want Limbaugh in their club.
As for losing target audience, your little Rockwellian portrait about Pops and Buddy sitting down to watch the gladitorial contest between good and evil went by the wayside two decades ago and it was mostly dug under by Jerry Jones, Al Davis and their ilk. The future of the NFL lies in capturing the growing hispanic population of huge swathes of the USA and in getting wives and girlfriends interested in the game for its own sake.
How does the man who coined the term, “Feminazi,” fit into that business plan.
Its despicable that some are requoting things that Limabaugh never said to use against him. There is ample documentation of the sludge and bile that he does produce to make the NFL owners want to give him a wide berth.
What a bunch of crap.
If the NFL told some liberal whackjob he couldn’t own a team, you’d be posting that the NFL is a private association and that freedom allows them to associate with whom they please and that neither the government nor political correctness should force them to do otherwise.
Augusta National is a good example – I bet you’re not on the bandwagon to demand they allow female members.
So now your own principle has led to one of your own getting rejected. Deal with it.
The same reason Rush is denied for ownership of a team should apply to Olbermann doing Sunday Night Football. Toss him from the show so it is watchable.
StB, if you can’t see the difference in your example then perhaps you should try reading at a lower level until you’re better at it. May I suggest RDW?
The left will never allow Limbaugh to find legitimacy…
That’s one of the funniest lines I’ve read in years. Limbaugh’s lack of legitmacy is his own fault, and the defense of his bigoted comments by people like you, James, enable his rantings.
You’re slipping. It’s sad to see.
Depicting the owners of the NFL and the players union as “the left” is laughable.
The most sure-fire way to ensure the right doesn’t gain any near term popularity with the moderate middle would be to rally around Rush and pity him as a noble martyr. The vast majority of America recognizes Limbaugh as the divisive media whore that he is. The more the right idolizes him and elevates him the fringier the right will become.
I thought James was smart enough to recognize that.
This is supposed to be a joke, right?
Sons and father, after church? Yeah, that’ll save the game. phht.
What about the rest of the population that loves football? Save your narrow wienie, judgemental views for your church buddies.
Seriously- can you imagine the harm and bad PR that could only come from the likes of LB? Man, talk about damage control. NFL shut that problem down before it even started.
Amen.

The NFL decides who becomes an owner not the other way around.
All this blowhard (Rush Hudson Limbaugh A.KA. Jeff Christie) has to offer is his money and his opinions, (which in my opinion are on the fringes of racism, one mans opinion). There are many more groups biding for the Rams, not just his group. Lets face it there are more men with money (Marshall Faulk) that will gladly fill the slot and the Rams will win or lose depending on how well they work as a team and not on whether or not Rush is an owner.
As for Vick, well he is a player (he has talent not like you, Rush or I, unless you are a NFL player?) and he served his time and the NFL decided we live in the land of second chances, so why not (I personally don’t like it but, oh well). Life has never been fair (NEWS FLASH!)
Now as to the “Free Speech” argument, I guess many of you like myself heard Rush on Thursday “Almost in tears”, priceless. But the last couple of days he now is in his normal ranting and will continue until someone surpasses him, “Free Speech” continues, so what is being stifled, it simply is not true, of course, you may not have a radio, so you might want to get one.
