Old man, look at my life, I drink a lot like you
Ah, the immortal voice of Neil Young.
You’re older now. Anybody can just drop off a six pack of Bud for dear old Dad. But if you have time this Father’s Day, maybe you can join dad for a couple of cocktails out on the back patio. Colleen Graham has a few “Manly Drinks” for the occasion:
Father’s Day is a special occasion and it is a great excuse to make your father a special drink. This list includes some of the most popular “manly drinks,” most of which require one type of whiskey or another but also a few with rum or tequila or a little of everything (see Long Island Iced Tea). The point is that Dad is likely not going to want any of the fruity, creamy or otherwise “girly” cocktails and you won’t find any of those here.
Given her choices, I suggest the Godfather, but then I like scotch:
One could make the connection between The Godfather movies and this drink which uses the sweet Italian liqueur, amaretto, and the robust, hard flavors of a smooth Scotch. Appropriately, the Godmother is a little softer with vodka. I like this one because it is a slightly more complex Scotch on the rocks but it doesn’t ruin or overpower the whisky.
1 1/2 oz Scotch
1/2 oz Amaretto
Build the ingredients in an old-fashioned glass with ice cubes.
However, I don’t see a recipe involving gin, and my father is a Beefeater’s man.
Gibson (rarely ordered, it is a sweet way to liven up your gin)
3 oz. Hendrick’s Gin
1/4 oz. Pickled onion juice
2 drops Dry Vermouth
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add all ingredients. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Skewer 3 pickled pearled onions and drop it into this beautiful liquid experience.
Finally, if there’s a break in the weather and you’ve retired to the lawn chair, CocktailTimes.com recommends a Gentlemen’s Tee for dad.
– 1 1/2 oz Gentleman Jack Rare Tennessee Whiskey
– 2 oz lemonade (not concentrate)
– 2 oz tea
– Splash of Sprite
– Lemon or lime slice
In a mixing glass filled with ice, add Gentleman Jack, tea and lemonade. Roll contents but do not shake. Pour into a highball glass. Add splash of Sprite. Garnish with a lemon and lime slice.
