Recount in the 84th Assembly District

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel finally caught up. After reporting the wrong result of the election from the 84th Assembly District, they reported today that there will be a recount tomorrow.

General contractor and real-estate investor John Marek requested the recount after unofficial results showed him trailing Mike Kuglitsch by 173 votes out of 8,819 cast. The recount in the district, which includes Waukesha and Milwaukee counties, will be held by officials in both counties on Friday morning, according to the recount order. The winner of the recount will face Democratic candidate Don Vanpool in November in this heavily GOP district, which includes New Berlin, Hales Corners and the Town of Waukesha.

There will actually be two recounts because the district reaches into Milwaukee County, one at the Waukesha County Courthouse and one in Hales Corners.

I’m surprised that Marek asked for a recount since 173 votes is a pretty healthy margin to try to overcome, even if were to hire Mike Maistelman as his attorney. Interestingly, the petition for the recount states Marek believes a mistake was made in the counting in New Berlin and there was some “illegalities” in the counting of the ballots in New Berlin.
