City to be secure this year. No keys are being handed out.

City of Waukesha Mayor Shawn Reilly, responding to my question in an email, said he has no plans to hand out “the key to the city” this year. Let me be the first to congratulate him on the decision.

Under former Mayor Jeff Scrima, the handing out of keys became ridiculous in the number that were handed out (36 total) and, quite often, to whom. Another year of handing out keys and Scrima would have needed to book the Waukesha County Expo Center for the ceremony. As for the receivers, some were worthy of thanks from the city, some definitely were not, and some were just fortunate to be supporters of the ex-mayor.

If the need arises to honor a citizen or an organization, a resolution by the Common Council is always appropriate. A “key to the city” should be reserved for special occasions, such as when someone truly significant visits the city. The next time the Dalai Lama* is in town to play golf at Moor Downs, give him a key. They shouldn’t be Christmas presents for friends and supporters.

*Heavy hitter, that Lama.
